Profile Description
Dr. Leonardo J. Akan is a highly experienced pediatrician with a specialization in pediatric endocrinology. He obtained his medical degree from the University of the West Indies and completed his residency training at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he served as Chief Paediatric Resident. With over 20 years of clinical experience, Dr. Akan has been dedicated to providing comprehensive pediatric care in both private practice and as a consultant in pediatrics with the North Central Regional Health Authority. He is board-certified by the American Academy of Pediatrics and has expertise in managing various pediatric endocrine conditions.
Dr. Akan completed a fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology at the University of Miami and, upon returning to Trinidad and Tobago, established the first growth hormone administration program for children in the public hospital system. In his private practice, he has initiated a comprehensive newborn screening program for inborn errors of metabolism, as well as newborn hearing and vision screening. He is certified in insulin pump training and runs a support group for patients utilizing continuous glucose monitoring systems.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Akan is actively involved in teaching medical students as an Associate Lecturer in Pediatrics at the University of the West Indies. He has organized the Transformer Fitness Program in collaboration with a group of healthcare professionals nationwide, further demonstrating his commitment to delivering high-quality care to his patients.
