Whooping cough is characterized by severe coughing spells that end with a high-pitched “whooping” sound as the person tries to inhale.
An adult can get whooping cough if their immunity has weakened over time. This can happen if they were not vaccinated, or if they have not had a booster shot as an adult.
Whooping cough can last for several weeks, often 6 to 10 weeks.
